How to optimize your LinkedIn profile

Your LinkedIn profile is an extension of your personal brand. An important first step for making the most of LinkedIn for your business is to optimize your profile. It needs to work as hard as you do!

By optimizing your profile, you’ll be more attractive to search engines, making it much easier for people to find you when conducting an online search.

Here are five things you can do today to optimize your profile and stand out on searches:

Have a great profile picture. First impressions matter, and your profile picture is the first thing clients and prospects see when they visit your page. Have a professional headshot. We strongly recommended avoiding “selfies” taken with your phone or using pictures in a casual setting.

Consider your professional headline. You want to make it as easy as possible for prospects and clients to find you when conducting an online search. Including terms such as “Financial Advisor” in your headline helps your clients and prospects find you easily in Google searches or on LinkedIn.

Indicate your education and current location. Be sure to add your college or university to network with alumni. Putting the city your office is currently located adds to your localized search rank.

Write a professional summary. This is a short narrative that describes your unique value proposition to clients and prospects. The most effective summaries are set up as a two- to three-sentence elevator pitch.

Customize your URL. By personalizing your profile’s URL to be something like linkedIn.com/in/firstnamelastname, you will make it easier for clients and prospects to find you.
