Putnam is hosting a webcast for financial professionals on February 17 entitled “Tax season in the Biden era.” In the webcast, I will join our wealth management colleague Chris Hennessey, and Putnam Portfolio Manager Paul Drury to examine issues and strategies that are important to advisors as they begin 2021 planning with clients.

The events surrounding the pandemic in 2020 continue to have a profound impact on individuals and businesses.

In 2021, investors continue to face change, with the impact of the first 100 days of the Biden administration and the potential for a shifting tax landscape.

The first major policy action under the new administration will likely be the passage of a pandemic relief bill. President Biden has proposed a $1.9 trillion bill with direct relief payments to individuals, extended unemployment benefits, money for vaccines and testing, and aid for state and local governments. It is not clear how much of the package will be approved.

The relief proposal also calls for expanding certain tax credits, including the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit. And, later in the year, Congress is expected to consider tax increases to generate revenue for spending programs. Potential tax law changes that may be proposed include a raise in the corporate tax rate, increased income and investment taxes for higher-income households, and a lower lifetime exclusion for estate and gift taxes.
